Today, we’ll share what we did on last Sunday at Skill Up Meeting.
先週の日曜日に行った語学勉強会の内容を紹介します。

日曜日にやった内容は、①地図を見て道案内をする、②ストーリーを時間内で作る、③移民の父に関する短い文章を読んで単語や意味の解説をする、この３つです！
今回のreading articleの内容は、移民の父「当山久三」さんに関する記事です。名前は聞いたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか？当山さん、イケメンなんですよ＾＾♪

〈Father of Iminchu〉
　　　Toyama Kyuzo is regarded as the “Father of Okinawan Emigration.” Toyama was born on November 9, 1868, in Kin Town, Okinawa.
　　　In 1898 Toyama moved to Tokyo, and although he had little luck in finding a job, he became strongly interested in emigration when he found a book on the subject at a used bookstore. At the same time, he was moved by the philosophy of Noboru Jahana, who was involved in the Movement for Civil Rights and Freedom. Later, when the Movement for Civil Rights and Freedom was met with setback, he began concentrating his effort and passion on emigration problems.
　　　Toyama faced much opposition when he first proposed his idea to Okinawans abroad. But finally, after much persuading, the first 26 Okinawans departed Naha Port for Hawaii on December 5, 1899. They would first stop at Yokohama Port, and then eventually leave for Hawaii.
　　　Since then, Okinawans have emigrated to all over the world. Today there are over 350, 000 Uchinanchu around the world. These “iminchu” have built strong communities and become good members of their new countries. Toyama said, “Let us go forth. The Five Continents are our home. Sincerity and determination will uphold us.”
　　　Toyama Kyuzo passed away in 1910, at the young age of 43. His ashes are interred at Mililani Memorial Park, in Hawaii.

〈沖縄移民の父〉
　当山久三は、沖縄を代表する偉人で、移民の父とされている。当山さんは、明治元年（1868年）11月、沖縄の金武村（現在の金武町）で生まれた。
　明治29年、彼は東京へ移り住んだが、仕事を得る機会にはあまり恵まれず、放浪の生活をしていた。ある日、彼は古本屋で「植民論」という一冊の本を見つけ、移民について非常に興味を持つようになった。同じころ、東京で沖縄民族の自由と解放のために闘っていた、沖縄出身の謝花昇と出会い、彼の哲学に心を動かされた。やがて、自由民権運動が挫折に終わると、彼は努力と情熱を沖縄からの海外移民計画に注ぐようになった。
　当初は、当山さんの呼びかけに反対の声が多く、移民を希望する者は少なかった。しかし、彼の根気強い説得のおかげで、ついに明治32年12月5日、沖縄最初のハワイ移民26人が、沖縄の那覇港から、ハワイへ出発した。（入国前の検疫で4人が不合格だった）彼らの船は横浜を経由して、やがてハワイへと上陸した。
　それ以降、沖縄の人々は世界の各地へ移民をするようになった。今日では35万人以上のうちなーんちゅが世界中で暮らしている。“いみんちゅ”たちは強固なコミュニティーを形成し、新しい国での良き一員となっていった。当山さんの不朽の言葉がある。「いざ行かん　吾等の家は五大州　誠一つの　金武世界石」
当山さんは、明治43年に、43歳という若さで他界した。彼の遺灰は、ハワイのミリラニメモリアルパークに埋められている。
